Bed bug prevention tips for Hyderabad apartments

Bed bugs do not come from dirt — they hitch a ride. In gated communities and PG hostels they move between flats through luggage, furniture and wall gaps. A few habits make it much harder for them to settle in.

Check luggage after travel

Unpack bags on a hard floor or in the bathroom, not on the bed. Wash travel clothes on a hot cycle and dry them fully. Look along suitcase seams and zips for small dark spots or pale eggs before storing them.

Be careful with second-hand furniture

Inspect used mattresses, sofas and wooden cots closely — especially joints, screw holes and fabric folds — before bringing them inside. Rental flats should be checked before moving in, not after the first bites.

Know the early signs

Rust-coloured spots on sheets, a sweet musty smell, and bites in a line on arms or legs are common first signs. Check mattress piping, bed-frame joints, headboards and the gap between the mattress and wall.

Reduce hiding places

Keep the bed a few inches from the wall, avoid storing clutter under it, and fill cracks in wooden frames. A zipped mattress encasement makes inspection easy and traps any bugs already inside.
